Spend Fast

One of the resolutions that hubs and I made this year is to complete a number of monthly "Spending fasts". There are a number of reasons for this but the main one being - just like any diet or fast, it will be wonderful to cleanse our credit cards and replenish our bank accounts. We also want to make sure we are staying on top of any "little" purchases/expenses that are not in our budget. There is nothing like a spending fast to point out exactly where you're spending too much money! Last year we did a similar fast for approximately 3 months in a row, excluding the cost of cell phone, gas and a small budgeted amount for groceries. It was amazing how much faster our savings increased! And this coming from two accountants who tend to watch every penny!

Since we are preparing to move in soon, even possibly this month (Feb.), we intend to leave some wiggle room in case we have to adjust to allow for the extra expenses that may come with that. Otherwise, here are our "rules" or exclusions (these don't count towards the spending freeze):

1 Tank of gas per week per car (gotta get to work and public transportation or walking is not an option)
$ for 1 large meal per week cooked for entire family (it would require purchasing too much food prior to the beginning of the month & we simply don't have the room- we already stock 3 fridges and 2 chest freezers)
Skate sharpening and & a few roles of hockey tape (can't really be done ahead of time)
Philies baseball tickets (they go on sale the 18th-it can't be helped)
Braves, White Sox & Cubs baseball tickets (ticket dates haven't been announced so we intend to plan on them being released in Feb.)
$ for throwing a Vintage-kitchen themed bridal shower (shower's late February so it also can't be helped)

Ok, so that really is a lot of exclusions, which is frustrating but the fact of the matter is-there are always expenses that are going to come up each month. Obviously if one of our cars breaks down, we will have to adjust. The main point of the spending fast is to enforce no money spent on extras. No money on groceries, no money on clothes or shoes or eating out or dates, regardless of what good deals come up (and I'm sure I will get 50 emails after I post this from all these different stores having once in a lifetime sales). Hopefully it will encourage us to think creatively for dates and teach us me better resolve. We loved it last year, so we're hoping for the same effect!

Now, I realize the tickets would be considered by most to be extras, however, we have a number of travel plans in the works that will be affected by the ticket dates & prices and since the goal of this fast is to save money, it didn't make much sense to not buy them at face value when scalpers & online ticket retailers will charge exorbitant mark-ups.

Has anyone ever done a spending fast like this before? Anything you think I might be missing? I'll definitely post updates throughout the month with how it's going as we plan to record every penny that walks out the door!

Blogger Awards

Over the last couple of months I have been giving several awards from a number of lovely bloggers, I've gotten a bit behind in posting them but I thought it was about time to catch up with some of the backlog!

The first was from the lovely Callie Nicole over at Through Clouded Glass! She gifted me with the Sugar Doll Award!

The second award comes from Mrs Lukie over at Sarah Says! She gifted me with the honest scrap award!

For both of these awards I am supposed to post 10 interesting facts about myself so I combined them together.

1. I haven't drank a soda in at least 5 or so years, I could probably count the number of times I've drank a soda in my life time on two hands.

2. The only way I will have a soda is in a root beer float, I big puffy pink heart them!

3. I love chocolate! However, I prefer dark chocolate to milk chocolate, don't like white chocolate at all and if given the choice between vanilla and chocolate ice cream? I will always pick vanilla.

4. I am a hula-hopping Queen! I would do this for hours at a time (literally) when I was a little girl and I still have it in me!

5. I am not a math person at all and yet I truly enjoy accounting (most of the time).

6. As much as I am a numbers-crunching, spreadsheet type of person, I HAVE to have my creative fixes or I will shrivel up and die. Jewelry making, cooking, scrapbooking, blogging and more recently photography and styling help keep me sane.

7. I still have a cell phone that is of the plain-jane-no-internet-no keyboard variety. I've had it for three years and I'm desperately hoping that it will hold out until our monthly budget can afford for me to majorly upgrade our plan (though the cell phone would be free!)

8. When I was in college, I bartended and I enjoyed it so much that if I could make a career out of it, I would.

9. Going along with number 8, I am not such a big drinker at all. After years of smelling the alcohol on me after ending the late night shifts, alcohol in general just doesn't really excite me. Though, those chocolate fontini's at Melting Pot are delectable!

10. I am not a coffee drinker at all, I've never been able to stand it unless it's chilled and combined with 90% sugar/cream/milk...or ice cream, I LOVE coffee ice-cream. I feel like this will last until I have kids, whereupon I will be come addicted.

Ok and now onto the nominees! I am supposed to award the sugar doll to 10 people:

Happy Friday

Well folks...I am sick, sick, sick....

Friday I had developed a splitting headache in the afternoon...it lasted the rest of the day and when I woke up I was fine...Saturday afternoon & Sunday afternoon same deal. Monday I woke up feeling refreshed, ready to take on the busy week. Felt great until Tuesday night when I developed a horrible stomach ache and my throat became raw. Wednesday was a ridiculous struggle, Thursday I was feeling slightly better and now Friday is the worst yet! The false hope is killing me!

I'm sorry if I haven't been around to comment on your blogs this past week, I've been trying to keep up with things but clearly, this virus is getting the best of me! I intend to spend some time in bed catching up this weekend but in the meantime, happy Friday to everyone!

Grace

Wedded Wednesday is a collaboration
of married bloggers sharing their inspirations,
anecdotes, struggles and thoughts regarding
the amazing union of two separate people, as one.
Check out the other Wedded Wednesday bloggers at Marital-Bless

Sorry folks, this week's Wedded Wednesday is a little bit late...I wrote this and meant to hit the post button but must have hit save instead...I've been battling some sort of virus and it's been keeping my production to a minimum. I'll try to put something up later but in the meantime, here is what I wrote.

I'm so thankful for grace right now. Grace from my husband who spent several hours Tuesday night holding me and rubbing my back when I didn't feel well even though he was exhausted from a late night hockey game. Grace from a God who gives me His strength to get through work days & commitments when I feel like I don't have it in me. Subconsciously I've always known that grace was important in any relationship but lately it's come to my attention just how important it is in marriage. The daily sacrifice for your other half, the compassion, the kindness, the caring...more than anything I want my husband to look at me as that kind of graceful woman, (though having grace in movement would probably be a good thing for me to develop too).

I hope that in moments of distress and tension, I will learn to offer grace and forgiveness, rather than criticism. Many times I am took quick to offer the "right answer", a criticism or judgement...

"Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters! Let every person be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger."
-James 1:19

Crosswalk suggests there are four elements of a grace-based marriage:
  1. Accept Differences

  2. Be Vulnerable

  3. Allow Mistakes

  4. Tell The Truth

My favorites (and my focus) right now are #'s 2 and 3 but I think they all tie in together nicely. I would love to find a mature couple that is non-family related that hubs and I could look to as role-models, particularly in an area like this but for now I'll settle with reading and learning through trial-and-error as much as I can on my own.

Rate My Space #1

Now that you guys have all seen the space we are working with I thought I'd show you the tentative design thoughts I've had floating around in my head. Not all the images were available for me to polyvore so you'll have to work with me here a bit...

Ok, now for my clarifications. The hutch image you see above will actually be a dark brown espresso stain (exact same lines though), the couch also isn't identical but these were the closest images I could find. Everything else is exactly what we have so far. Oh and there will be two of those bookcases!

The bookcases and couch are leftovers from our previous house and have been sitting in storage ever since. We don't have the heart to upgrade the couch yet though we are already discussing how soon we will be upgrading it down the road since it's kind of small (heaven knows that won't work with my family).

The leather recliner is hub's man chair that we bought in North Carolina this year and is the most comfortable piece of furniture I have ever sat in. The hutch and chest (upper right-hand corner) are also being shipped up from North Carolina, the chest is actually a piece from our bedroom set that we will more than likely use out in the living room to store linens and other kitchen misc (or I'm thinking we should upgrade to a bar!).

The rug is a recent online purchase and I have high hopes for it (though I have yet to see it in person). If we love the pattern as much as I'm hoping we'll love it, we are thinking about buying it in gray as well for our bedroom.

Right now the walls are a brownish-gray color that you saw in the previous post. The artwork we currently have includes:

The maps are in the process of being framed with leftover molding, they are mounted on foam board and marked with tacks from all our travels (they are also pretty big-like 46x30 a piece). The typography pieces are a tribute to my husband's involvement and love of baseball-the Fenway Park piece is one that I researched and custom-designed with a fantastic artist for his birthday last year. All the pieces have a whole lot of brown/vintagey vibe going on.

As you can see, we're looking at a whole lot of similar but slightly mis-matchy dark browns and black except for the rug. I'm hoping the rug will add a lovely pop of color and I know we can always add pillows/blankets and decorative knick-knacks for more color. Anything that this room is just screaming that it's missing to any of you? I know many are of you are quite talented with design, I've seen pictures of your homes/weddings/etc. so I would love to hear your input, even if you think it's horrible and we should start fresh (just break it to me gently if that's what you think)!! I have a collection of old milk glass vases that I was thinking might be lovely to display and we also have a lovely selection of Whitney Smith Pottery of which I've included a sampling of her work:

Contrary to how it may seem, we don't actually have an aversion to color, we apparently do really love our dark furniture though... :) I would love to do a gallery wall with photos, we have so many beautiful ones from the engagement/wedding/trash the dress/honeymoon/anniversary/boudoir shoots. I have also been thinking about perhaps hanging some vintage antique china plates? I inherited a few from my great-grandmother that I would love to perhaps add to and maybe hang on the wall (gotta take advantage of this now before I have kids tearing through the house right?)!
Ok, so that was a lot and random and all over the place but if you followed any of that, any thoughts and opinions would be very much appreciated! :)

And We Have Our Winners!

Well it took me awhile, but I went through all the entries, added in all the missing extra entries, tallied it up in a spreadsheet and used random.org to pull the winner of the Domestic goddess giveaway...congratulations goes to Mrs. Potts of Experiments in a Galley Kitchen!

As an added bonus, since the giveaway was so popular with you all, I picked up a few extra little Le Creuset treats to give out as bonus "door" prizes, so congratulations to Bee Angels and Amy!

I had so much fun with this guys, I have to admit I loved picking out all the items and I was so happy to see that you guys were just as excited about it as I was! If you didn't win, don't worry, I will be having many more big giveaway bashes like this one!

Customer Service?

First things first, I will have the winner posted for the Domestic Goddess Giveaway as soon as I finish tallying up the entries, in the meantime I need to get something off my chest and where else other than my blog, right?

***Warning-this is a rather long post without any pictures-I will have much more delightful reading up later today when I announce the winner!***

In the last several months I have fallen hard for the store Martin+Osa. I have placed orders for myself and for others that, in total, have been in the 4 figures... It's been my newest found retail love! The sweaters, the tops, the jeans, the amazing sales, what was not to love?!? Well, recently it has become increasingly apparent to me that the customer service has definitely been one of the reasons not to love. Now, before I go any further, I will say that this is just what I have experienced, many other people could have had much more positive experiences but given that this has happened to me on multiple occasion and is not just an isolated incident...I'm a little frustrated.

Before I vent, I will say that the store associates and online customer service been wonderful and helpful when I was placing orders (particularly the larger ones) but if I try to return something or there is a problem with my order (that was completely out of my control), more often than not I've been hassled and given major attitude. A few examples:

Yesterday I was at the mall trying to return several different items from different purchases. Before I went I separated each item with it's own receipt into separate bags, everything was organized, everything was in pristine condition-folded nicely, everything had the tags on so this all should have been a no-brainer right? Unfortunately not so much, 45 minutes into attempting to return the items I start to develop a POUNDING headache due to multiple sales associates' attitudes and complete lack of an ability to read a receipt.

The first return is one item, she should be able to scan the bar code on the sweater and scan the bar code on the receipt and be done right? No, instead she spends nearly 10 minutes trying to return the wrong sweater and can't figure out why the price isn't coming up right...after numerous attempts to show her on the receipt I have to reach over and POINT AT HER COMPUTER. She gets all flustered and makes excuses...Return #1 complete.

Return #2, also one item, more problems-this time it keeps saying my credit card doesn't match except for the fact that the credit card listed on the receipt and the one in my hand are the exact same! They keep looking to me-what am I supposed to do here? I can't just whip out a magical credit card! Many many minutes later, manager figures out an over-ride and return #2 is complete.

Return #3, one item, the computer can't figure out the receipt....the sales associate takes my credit card and swipes it to look up the purchase (btw I am super displeased over the fact that they are saving all my credit card information)...only there are too many purchases associated with the credit card and she doesn't feel like looking through them all....they look at me blankly and say they don't know what's wrong but it's giving them an error message, ummm how come I have to figure it out???? My head is already pounding at this point and I finally just request that she put it on a giftcard and I'll try to figure out how to spend it (why is it that it's so much easier to charge money ONTO your credit card rather than put it back on?). She manages to figure out how to do this easily enough...Return #3 complete.

Return #4 was a few different items from an online order. At this point the sales associate really ups the attitude quotient and raises her voice at me telling me that she can't figure out what she's already returned and what belongs to this receipt...is this MY fault!?!?!? I have only handed her three items from previous returns-which I handed to her one at a time with the receipt, waiting until she was done with the return before handing her the next receipt & item... Why can't she move them off her counter behind her where everyone else seems to be placing their returns? All the other sales associates are giving me the dirty looks for ruining the stores sales quotas for the day (my returns were not even $200)and a few even make snide remarks about internet shopping not working for me. Ummm, she is holding an invoice in her hand that had 20 items purchased on it! I return a couple of them and all of a sudden internet shopping doesn't work for me?!?!?! I point that out to one of them and they actually have the decency to look embarrassed for a minute and then they respond by telling the girl that every single order needs to be verified to make sure I'm not ripping them off. Yes, they say that right in front of me...."ripping us off" Also, only two of my four returns were from shopping online, so I don't see how that had anything to do with anything... A little while later we are still there, now the sales associate can't figure out how to return the items together as one order since the invoice was three separate stapled pieces of paper....for some reason or other she has to treat items on each separate page as it's own return and I have to stand there for an extremely prolonged period of time getting dirty looks, being hassled while she slowly returns each one (having problems with a couple of them). She knocks one of the items off to the side, doesn't make an effort to return it and when she hands me my receipt telling me she's done, I try to point it out saying you haven't return this one yet, she gives me the death stare, sighs loudly and then proceeds to return it extra slow...frankly I've never been more humiliated in my life. I had a whole bunch of items that I was planning to purchase after I finished the returns but after being treated like that I felt so flustered that had to leave...return #4 complete.

Unfortunately I haven't had much better luck online. That 20 item order I placed? Well, only 15 showed up in the box, I called to check to see if there was another box and there was only the one, so somehow 5 of my items didn't make it into the box. The sales associate made several comments about how she'd never heard of this happening before and had I looked carefully? was the box tampered? was I sure they weren't in there...? To the point that I was left to feel like a criminal, ripping them off! I'd have liked all the items to be in the box too! That's why I ordered them in the first place. The customer service rep said she would have the items reshipped out to me if they were still available (they were-I checked online) but instead they canceled my order.

Another time, I called the customer service for a price adjustment. She tells me that Martin + Osa has a 14 calender day price adjustment policy, I say ok, that's perfect, I ordered it exactly 2 weeks ago so that should apply here, she gets all irritated and says...no Saturday would have been 12 calender days, today is the 14th day....yeaaaahhhhh???? You just said it was a 14 day price adjustment window! *sigh*

In addition to all this, their free shipping for orders over $100 apparently doesn't always apply automatically to orders like it's supposed to. It's not supposed to require a code but I discovered I was charged for shipping on my very first order, I emailed them-no response, put in a ticket-no response-I had to call and complain in order to get my money refunded when I never should have been charged at all!

Why is this all so difficult! I have NEVER in my life ever had this much trouble with a store before and have done A LOT of shopping in my life-particularly online. I don't expect people to fawn over me when I shop, I am just fine being left alone-I'll pick out what I need/want and bring them up to the register, pay and be done with it. But there are going to be times when I order stuff online and it doesn't work, in which case, yes, I will return it... I'm not a demanding customer at all, in fact my husband often teases that I'm a retailers dream...

*sigh* I'm sorry this post is so long... I've had poor customer service before but it's always been isolated incidences where someone was clearly just having a bad day. I really like the clothing at Martin Osa but I have been so turned off by the repeated mistreatment that I am really rethinking shopping there. It's a shame too because I love their new spring line and I had a cart of more than 20 items that I was in love with. Please make me feel better guys, has anyone else shopped there and had a positive experience? Anyone else had negative shopping experiences like these? Does customer service still exist?

Our Humble Abode

It's been awhile since I've posted a "real" update on the house, at least real in the sense that it's accompanied by pictures! Because who I am kidding, everyone really just wants to see the before and after pictures...if I'm lucky, I might get you to read the text in between after you're done looking at the pictures! :) All jokes aside, here is what we started with (actually it was much worse than this in the beginning but we were so engrossed with tearing it out that we forgot pictures-bad blogger!):

kitchen

kitchen

office/nursery

portion of the master bedroom

As you can see, these photos were taken in the beginning stages but not necessarily the actual beginning. It's a shame really that I don't have photos of that hideous mess of rodent skeletons, nests, dirt and all the other wonderful presents the previous tenant had left behind but thankfully you all will be spared that glorious mess. Here are some more current photos that have been taken:

hallway

family room

kitchen

office/nursery

master bedroom

We are in the midst of installing the crown molding (which is the wood you see lying in the living room) and putting the final paint touches on the walls & ceilings. Below is the my view from the kitchen windows, suddenly I want spring here very badly!

And there you have it, I'm sure there will be plenty more posts to come of renovation delays, furniture placement, decor dilemmas and other such frivolities. In the end, we are excited to make it our very own. :)

Moving Forward Together

Wedded Wednesday is a collaboration
of married bloggers sharing their inspirations,
anecdotes, struggles and thoughts regarding
the amazing union of two separate people, as one.
Check out the other Wedded Wednesday bloggers at Marital-Bless

As you can see from my posts this week, Hubs and I are in the midst of a very busy time in our lives. Important decisions need to be weighed, decisions that (not to go all dramatic or anything) will affect us for the rest of our lives. Sometimes it can be tough to find a medium between focusing on the now and learning to be content with what you have versus planning for the future. I lean towards more of a type-a personality, more often than not I am the planner and organizer, though Hubs personality is quite similar (just not quite as ridiculous as mine can be). Neither of us is very content just living the day to day without making the most of what we've been given.

While we are content and happy with what we have (most of the time), it can be all too easy to get caught up in all the events on the horizon. A house, kids, new jobs, money, various opportunities...it can make you feel like you're in a giant swirling tornado. As we've learned to recognize this, Hubs and I have instituted monthly goal dates in order to help us slow down and enjoy the "now" moment. We use these coffee shop style dates to look towards our future plans and see whether we are still on track. Both hubs and I have "man/woman plans" that we created in order to help us visualize what is important to us individually and our dreams for the future. These plans were combined and reworked to form our "family plan" and ensures that we are moving forward together in the direction that we have chosen as a couple. It touches on everything from careers, where we want to live, what kind of house we want, all things kids, finances, spiritual life, health & fitness etc... Think of it as extreme New Years Resolution setting for life. We are working to break those goals down into 1/3/5/10/15/20 year increments and starting to looking at our future this way has brought so much more clarity to the present.

While I realize that none of us know how long we have on this earth, Hubs and I feel that we also don't want to come up short in the end-looking back on years of wasted time and energy on projects that didn't deserve devotion or priority status. I don't know about you guys but when I am held accountable for my life, I want to hear "Job well done" and frankly, more often than not, I feel like I'm ending my day with more of a "better luck next time" vibe. We both hope (God willing) to spend a good portion of our lives volunteering and working with various ministries. We love kids and would love to adopt and work with foster kids in addition to having our own. Both of us want to work in financial and debt counseling full time down the road as volunteers as we have seen way too many people around us that don't fully grasp the power of money.

These are all future goals however, and sometimes it can be hard not to scream when you feel like everything you hope to achieve and do and be in life is on hold. Our hope is that by setting clear visuals for our future, it will make it easier to break down lofty goals into achievable steps. I guess we'll have to see! Talk to me again in 20 or so years and I'll let you know how it worked out. :) Have any of you attempted or done something like this before?

Learning to Adjust

Part 2-if you missed part 1, check out yesterday's post!

Many people think that with such a large family we must have a massive home. In a word, No. We don't. It was a three bedroom, 3.5 bath that my parent's turned into 6 bedroom-3.5 bath house. We're all used to doubling up (we have our whole lives) but it definitely gets harder as everyone gets bigger. The house doesn't grow to accommodate everyone else growing up. Some days it can be particularly challenging learning how to be married in front of 7 not-married siblings. It was a growth experience for my husband to move in with 10 crazy people after growing up with 2 quiet normal brothers. Never has the expression "you don't marry one person, you marry their whole family" meant more than what he's learned to adjust to. He didn't understand that at a dinner for 11+ people, when your siblings are all vying for their fair share of the food and if you take a drop more than your share someone will call you out on it. :) Don't worry, no one ever starves in the house-they all just have very healthy appetites.

It can be tough when you and your husband want to go to bed and your brother's have a rowdy game of xbox/ps3/nintendo going on on the other side of the wall. It's an adjustment when you want to sleep in on Saturday-your only day to sleep in and your brother decides EVERY Saturday that it's the perfect time to play a game of football complete with diving catches right above your room. You may get headaches when another sibling decides it's the perfect time to play the piano for the 20th time that day and it's 11:30pm at night and you have to get up at 6 the next day for work and the piano seems to pipe into your room through the floor and become more and more amplified. It can be frustrating when you need to get ready for work and someone has decided to take a leisurely shower for 40 minutes in your bathroom. It can be particularly irritating when you finally get into the said bathroom and find out that the shampoo/soap/tooth paste/toilet paper has been completely used up and not replaced. It can drive you absolutely crazy when you finally get the bathroom and find out that there is not a drop of hot water left and you get to take an icy cold shower in the dead of winter. It can be tough when one person has had a bad day and it seems to spread and infect everyone else. Speaking of infecting, it's an absolute pain in the butt when someone comes home from some function sick because, yep! You're about to catch it from them! We all knew we never stood a chance against the swine flu.

Obviously I write this all tongue-in-cheek. I absolutely adore my family and I always will. Hubs has also tremendously enjoyed having a whole new family and siblings to rag on all the time. Think of it like living in a fraternity/sorority house, minus all the drinking, drugs and shacking up. Sisters and mom all sharing closets, brothers and my dad for the most part sharing wardrobes as well. We all each take a day of the week where we are in charge of cooking for the entire family. The washer and dryer run around the clock and it's all hands on deck when we experience snow storms like we did back in December or the tractor decided to die and we have a month left of summer where 7+ acres of grass still needs to be mowed...by hand. We are all extremely close and always kid each other that we will just buy a giant plantation and build a giant house with 9 wings-1 for each of us and 1 for my parents. In a few short months life like this will change forever and we will more than likely never all be in the same house together again. Hubs and I will be moving into our space and brother#1 leaves for military reasons. Whenever life seems out of control for all involved, we stop and remember that for better or for worse, it's a stage that won't last forever and we will all forever look back on this time with fondness. Forgetting the frustrations and remembering the laughter. All the nights all of us crowded around the dinner table eating and laughing together. Weekends spent cheering on our football team. Playing five on five football/basketball/baseball/soccer out in the yard while frying up 10-20lbs of chicken. Holidays spent lounging around, playing board games and cards, crowding around the tv watching movies and playing tournaments of mario kart.

For the most part, life flows pretty seamlessly here, hubs and I have learned SO much in the last year (our first full year of marriage) about each other. It was a huge and different adjustment for both of us to move in like this, probably much bigger for him and it was also an adjustment for my family having us move in as well. It took a long time to even feel like we were married (months after the wedding) and we felt a teensy bit robbed of the "honeymoon" stage of marriage but our marriage grows more rich with each passing day as we grow closer to each other and fall more in love. When people react in shock when they hear how hubs and I have been living the last year and a half, I understand where they are coming from but deep down I know that we wouldn't have traded this experience and all that we've learned for anything.

People of the House

A lot of people have asked a bunch of questions in the last couple of months about our living quarters, the number of people we live with, resolutions, fitness, etc. it's been on my to-do list to write a number of posts about us for awhile now but I just haven't had the time to write a lot. So today kicks off what will hopefully be a week of catch-up/get to know us type posts. If these type of posts bore you, you can always just tune back in on Saturday when I announce the huge giveaway winner. :)

The question I have been asked in the comments and in emails the most by far is why are there 11 (or 12) people in our house! Here is your first answer:

The above picture was taken during the Christmas holidays and from left to right is: My husband, me, brother#4, brother#3, brother#1, sister#3, brother#2, sister#1, sister#2. Not included in the picture is my parents and if you add up all those people, you would get 11. Throw in a couple of brother#2 and sister#2's friends that some days seem to be practically living in our house, bedding down right outside our bedroom and using our bathroom....it adds up to 12ish people around the clock.

So that answers the first question of why 11 12 people. But why are we living with them? Well that is a bit of a longer answer. Hubs and I lived in Massachusetts for about 5 years. After we graduated undergrad, we started working in Boston, pursuing our CPAs and graduate degrees. We had a beautiful house in the outskirts of Boston with a couple other friends of ours, four bedrooms, two bathrooms, multiple porches & decks and a HUGE kitchen that all four of us could easily work in without bumping into each other at all (I tell you all of this so that you can appreciate our dramatic change). When we added wedding planning to the above mix, we started planning the wedding for Maryland as I had a much bigger family (think 150+ extended family vs like 25+ on his side) with the majority living in Maryland or surrounding states. It made it more financially feasible for a lot of them to be able to afford to attend, which was important since we got married as the economy was plummeting and no one wanted to spend money. This added destination wedding planning to our growing to-do list!

We didn't originally plan to move to Maryland before the wedding (as if we didn't already have enough going on) but circumstances occurred making it abundantly clear that we were supposed to be living in Maryland ASAP. It was something that we had hoped to do a couple of years down the road when we started our own family, so we could be closer to my family. It was still quite a mental adjustment for both hubs and I to be moving to Maryland so much earlier. But two months before the wedding we packed up and moved...did I mention we had a whole house in Boston? Did I also mention that hubs and I furnished the entire house and were the "managers" of the house (aka bore the financial responsibility)? The moving decision was made and we were given a couple of months to finalize everything. Finish our degrees, finish the CPA, get one of our cars dropped off in MD & come back to Boston to dump as much of our furniture as we could on craigs list, pack the rest of it in a MASSIVE moving truck all by ourselves in two days and drive it all down, all by ourselves, driving through the night, only to unload it all in storage (for what we thought would only be a couple of months) and a few days later start our new jobs in Maryland. *Phew*

We moved into my family's house for what was supposed to be a couple of months, the original plan consisted of the two months before the wedding and a month after the honeymoon while we figured out the best location to live. Well...a year and a half later we are still living here. :) We should have known right? We came back from the honeymoon and I found out that while I was gone the company had made the decision that I was to be "deployed" in my job the following Monday and would be traveling all over out of town for the majority of the next 7 months. Welcome to wedded bliss right? This dramatically changed our plans as we didn't want to invest money in something while I was gone (hubs was already going to be in and out of town for his job) and so, we slept on a double mattress for two weeks in the living room of my parent's house (along with the 10+ other people living in the house) while my dad split the finished basement in half and built half of it into a room big enough for us to live in. Both my husband and I ended up leaving our jobs for other jobs midway through last year but in the meantime, an option for a house had came up during all the turmoil that we decided to go for and for the last year we have been renovating a barn-turned house into a home. It's a bit small but it's got plenty of room for us and even a couple of kiddies squeezed in down the road before we'll have to start thinking about moving. The house had to be torn down to the studs and COMPLETELY renovated if you catch my drift. In the meantime, we've been continuing to living in our basement quarters so as to be able to work on the renovations every day after work and save money.

That whole year of 2008 is what hubs and I jokingly refer to as the black hole of our lives. We went through so much that year, on top of everything I wrote above, my body decided to shut down and start an all-out-internal war within me and weight I didn't have to loose was melting off me faster than ice cream on a super hot day. We went through so much emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually and survived (!!) that we knew we were meant to be together forever. I love him so much! 2009 continued the theme of change and adaptability-we experienced so much growth in our relationship and communication and, as a result, drew a lot closer to each other. 2010 will more than likely carry the theme as well, though we are hoping it will feel a little bit more like adventure and a lot less like a zombie walk.

And so ends part 1 of our story, stay tuned for part 2 tomorrow....

Friday Loooove Edition

Well, I haven't done a Friday love post in awhile so I thought I'd start the New Year off right. This is for you my dear...

To my Forever,

Life with you has been fun and crazy and all kinds of wonderful. I feel that the last year and a half has given us such a different perspective on life and we have grown together as a couple more than I could have ever imagined. We have made so many incredible memories and I get warm fuzzies just reflecting back. I am so tickled to get to be your wife and spend the rest of our lives making so many more happy moments!

Thank you for your love and support! Thank you for your dedication to us and dedication to making us both better people. It has been incredible watching you step up to the plate in our marriage and really take on the leadership head-on. You've learned and grown so much, it has been incredible to watch. I really am such a lucky girl. Thank you for always challenging me and for holding my hand each step of the way. For leading by example instead of nagging me. For never being afraid to take on an issue. For putting aside procrastination and getting it done before I can even blink. For giving 110% all the time. For sacrificing your needs and wants over my own. For packing me a gourmet breakfast and lunch every day. For making sure I drink enough water and take all my vitamins. For keeping the gas tanks full and driving me when the roads are icy and slick...

You are my other half and I am so so lucky to a part of team us. I love you infinity mostest (me)!

-A very blessed girl

Marital Secrets

Wedded Wednesday is a collaboration
of married bloggers sharing their inspirations,
anecdotes, struggles and thoughts regarding
the amazing union of two separate people, as one.
Check out the other Wedded Wednesday bloggers at Marital-Bless

Today's Wedded Wednesday post that I wanted to share with you is about a lovely article from Real Simple The article is entitled "Secrets of Staying (Happily) Married for 50 Years" and is about 7 couples who have all been married for 50+ years.

I thought it was a wonderful feature by Real Simple and it had some lovely thoughts from each of the couples. I've included a few below:

1“We don’t read newspapers at breakfast. We talk to each other,” says Betty.

2“Our clocks click exactly the same. Whenever Betty wants to do something, I want to do it, too,” says Louis.
(Betty & Louis Chernoff: married 60 years)

1“We don’t get in each other’s way. I don’t challenge what Bill spends. And he knows better than to touch my computer,” says June.

2“She always liked my legs, so I still wear shorts!” says Bill.
(June and Bill Pritchard: married 64 years)

1“You’ve got to be able to trust your spouse. If she passes me the ball, I try to run with it. And if I pass her the ball, she does the same,” says Jim.

2“Jim loves to talk, so by now I’ve heard most of his stories. But they’re all good ones, so I still happily listen. And as for me? Jim thinks I can do just about anything,” says Macon.
(Macon & Jim McDavid: married 51 years)

1“Never stop courting. We always try to see each other the way we did in our early days, even though I sure look different from that girl he married!” says Imogene.

2“Elmer always takes my hand and leads me across the parking lot like I’m his girl and he’s taking care of me,” says Imogene.

3“I take Imogene’s hand and help her walk because otherwise she’s liable to fall down,” says Elmer.
(Imogene & Elmer Edwards: married 55 years)

1“Don’t get angry over more than one thing at a time. People jump around from one issue to another,” says Ben.

2“We still kiss. We’re affectionate. But it comes naturally. It doesn’t happen for show. Sometimes we just lay down in bed and hold hands,” says Stella.
(Stella & Ben Sonnenschein: married 51 years)

1“Let her go shopping. More than once, I’ve left a garage sale and gone to get my truck to carry all her antiques home. But true to Japanese tradition, we tolerate and accept every part of each other’s personalities,” says Pete.
(Ayako Kawakami & Harold “Pete” Petersen: married 53 years)

1“Treasure the little moments. When I go grocery shopping, Morgan always says, ‘Wait! I’ll go with you!’ His companionship has turned an uninteresting errand into something special. When Morgan was in the hospital last year for kidney problems, I wandered around Costco by myself, thinking how much I missed him,” says Barbara.

2“Communication is a big part of our staying married all these years. But as I get older, not being able to hear so much plays a big part, too,” says Morgan.
(Barbara & Morgan Barokas: married 54 years)

I thought it was very interesting to hear from couples from different walks of life. I love how each couple found what worked for them! Being married to someone so long is not easy! Sometimes I hear statements from people generalizing that once you get past a certain number of years in your marriage it becomes easy...ummm I'm not sure where they're getting their information from but I don't know if I would ever define marriage as easy! It seems to me that a marriage is always evolving, always morphing and changing into something new as life around you changes. Some of the things that I find work really well in my marriage might utterly fail in another marriage. I find people are eager to share advice or judge the moment things can get screwy or out of whack in your relationship (or for that matter-simply when they don't agree with what you're doing!) but when things are going well, they try to pry the "secret" out of you, because there must be some perfect key that they are missing, right? Well, my marriage isn't perfect, it's had it's rough points, its spectacular moments...and a whole lot of lovely every day moments that I wouldn't trade for the world. And my "secret"? Well the only "secret" I've ever known is faith, faith that gets you through the toughest of tough times. Oh and laughter helps too. :)

Domestic Goddess Giveaway

This is a giveaway that I have excitedly been putting together for awhile and I'm delighted to finally get it started. This time around we have a fabulous selection of cooking related items!

The first item is a signed copy of the Pioneer Woman's Cookbook!

I have been a faithful follower of her blog for many years and I was so excited to learn she was releasing a cookbook. The book is filled with her gorgeous photography, step-by-step photos of recipes and plenty of stories from the ranch life.

Next up we have a custom set of 7 spice jars from Gneiss Spice!

I adore her work and I think I about fell out of my chair when I first found her work on Etsy. I already have several items of my own picked out to order from her as soon as my kitchen renovation is done! The hexagonal shape of each one of her jars fits together creating a spice-colored honeycomb pattern on your fridge. The reusable jars come die-stamped with the name of the spice, strong neodymium magnets keep the jars from sliding and the lids form a tight seal to keep the spices fresh. She offers more than 70 different spices along with the option to contact her if there is a special one you are looking for that is not on her list. A special thank you to Gneiss Spice for donating a set of her spices for this giveaway! Please check out her Salts of the World giftset where she is donating $25 of the purchase price from each set to KIVA!!!

The next item included is a Boojiboo apron! I have amassed quite a collection of these adorable aprons over the last year and the lucky winner will receive the following apron!

I have to say, if you have not checked out their etsy shop, you really should. They have nearly 10,000 sales on etsy and for good reason! They offer several different styles that are all cut to flatter various female figures, they also offer child sizes! Their prices are very reasonable and they are great to work with if you are looking for something custom. Oh and just a little fyi...guys love them too, Hubs is a HUGE fan of me wearing these aprons... ;)

Last up we have a set of 4 Le Creuset ramekins and 2 rectangular stoneware enamel baking dishes in Kiwi (same color as show on the front color of Pdubs cookbook):

Holiday Recap

So I'm a bit late with my Christmas and New Year's recap post but the holidays extended straight into work craziness and there just hasn't been the opportunity to do it right.

Christmas was spent home in Maryland with my family, the holidays were spent laughing, playing board games, more laughing, Christmas movie watching, sledding, visiting relatives and in general being big kids. The hubs and I exchanged the majority of gifts in private so as not to make it seem unfair to the kids that we got each other more gifts than we got them (the hubs reaaaaallly spoiled me this year). We had such fun establishing new Christmas traditions this year, this was the first year we had the chance to stop, breath and think about what it meant to us and how we, as a family, wanted to celebrate.

Last Wednesday we flew up to Vermont to celebrate a belated Christmas and New Year's with hubs parents and brothers. We had such a wonderful relaxing time. We choose to fly into New Hampshire and rent a car to drive the rest of the way, it was snowing when we got there and snowed constantly until we left so we ended up upgrading to a Toyota Camry that had 4-wheel drive, I had no idea that they made them with that option! Definitely the best $30 we could have spent though because we didn't take it out of 4-wheel drive the whole trip. In fact, Saturday we had to leave several hours early to avoid a huge winter storm front coming in, we passed 4 multiple car pile-ups and it took us nearly double the time to get the car back to the airport. Our flight was delayed getting home (of course) to the point that we were concerned we'd be snowed in, thankfully we were finally able to take off for Maryland. I am so grateful we were able to make it out as Vermont received 33 inches in the approximately 24 hours after we left. Our flight had trouble landing in Baltimore and I nearly passed out on the plane when they turned off the air and kept missing the landing and having to do all these crazy accelerations and maneuvers, I don't know if I've ever flown sideways in such a big plane. I was so happy when that plane landed, of course I had plenty of time to recover at baggage claim when our gallon of maple syrup that we brought back got misplaced. When we finally got it it was covered in multiple inspection stickers and tape. Oh well, it was worth it!

While we were in Vermont, the Hubs played in his highschool Alumni hockey game. He was skilled enough to make the team as a freshman and his highschool won states nearly every year! His youngest brother recently made the team as a freshman, so clearly the hockey skillz run in the family! It was the first time that Hubs had played in an official hockey game with his youngest brother so I did this best I could at attempting to document the event:

Hubs had a great time seeing his old coaches and teammates from varying years and I had a fantastic time cheering the boys on (thank goodness for those Ugg boots-I have been living in them with the single and sub-degree temperatures). In fact the hubs and his bro scored the first goal of the game, it was teamwork at its finest!

All in all it we had a wonderful holiday break but I admit to being glad that it's over. I honestly think the holidays exhausted me more and I was so relieved to get back into my routine and schedule of sorts. Though, coming back to huge piles of work wasn't exactly what I had in mind! I'm very grateful all the crazy travel is done and we don't have another trip planned for another couple of months. Plenty of New Years resolutions and renovations to keep me busy!
