Did you ever make a list when you were little about everything you hoped your husband would be? I’m sure I did on more than one occasion but I still have the length list I made when I was in high-school. The list had nearly 60 character traits, emotional, spiritual, physical etc. on it and amazingly…my husband has every single one. Rather than write the whole list out and bore you with my teenage wishes, I’ll just summarize.
I wished for someone tall with a nice solid build, muscular, beautiful smile and blue eyes and did not have a hairy back (I was am shallow…what can I say), wait is this TMI? God granted every single one of these.
I wished for someone athletic, disciplined, smart, hard working, good with money, excellent chef, handy, good with kids – my husband is all these and more.
I wished for someone to share my heart, my values, my God, my hopes for a big family, my desire to attempt homeschooling our children, my desire to be a stay-at-home mom and someone who shared my healthy diet. Again, God granted me all of these things.
When I first looked back on the list, I figured that maybe about half of the wishes had been fulfilled, seeing as how detailed I was and how some of the items on the list were very specific. I also didn’t know how much of a grasp I had on myself and who I was at such a young age, that I would be able to write a detailed list of my soul mate. Turns out I must have been more in touch than I thought!
The interesting aspect to me is how God met some of those hopes. For example, my husband didn’t originally dream of having the big family like I did nor think much on whether his wife would stay at home, and he certainly didn’t share my diet when we first started dating! In fact, when we first started dating, I didn’t even know where he stood with his relationship with God! I knew he was a man of character and integrity from our past interactions, but God didn’t come up in our conversations until we got much closer to each other. God changed my husband’s heart without me having to say or do a thing!
It just goes to show, that God had a good handle on what I needed, of course that sounds kind of silly to say, but how many times do we forget to trust? I always knew I had to have a husband good with money, thank goodness God gave me someone who is good with money AND is a saver…he definitely balances out my spending tendency! I wanted to marry someone good at cooking, the husband didn’t know too much about cooking when he met me but since cooking together he’s become fantastic! I wanted someone who got along with my family, and not only did my husband have all the kids names down after the first time he met them, but he’s handled living in the same house with them now for over a year! He deserves high honors for that! I wanted someone to balance me out and always thought that God would have to make it someone who had a much stronger personality than my own, instead he gave me the sweetest sweetest husband you can ever imagine, he sweetens me up, rather than crushing me down.
Obviously I’ve only talked about some of the bigger issues in relationships but the hubby and I share a lot of opposites in how we do things, you know the whole “toilet paper unrolling from the top or bottom” type thing. In many ways, all our little opposites somehow come together and blend together really well. We came from two waaaaaay different backgrounds and grew up really different than each other but somehow it just works when we’re together! I know most of my friends have married people who are just like them, and for the most part, it has worked really well for all of them. A few of my friends have married opposites and it’s still anyone’s game as to how it’s going to go (they are brand new newlyweds) but I have high hopes for them as well.

Did you marry an opposite personality to your own or someone who shares all your special little quirks?

I don't know that I would say Mr. Lukie and I are opposites personality-wise, but we compliment one another very well. For instance, I am quite impatient (God is working on this in me!) and my husband is easy-going and stays calm. I am not the best with money, but he is a genius when it comes to earning, spending & saving. I can be harsh in my dealings when I feel that I've been wronged, but he is gentle & caring, always taking the time to make sure he's not hurting feelings along the way.
I think we feed off of one another--he fills in my weak spots and I fill in his. God truly prepared the two of us for one another and I am continually amazed at this wonder :)
We are completely opposite as well!! He's easy going, I'm a planner. He's an optomist, I'm a realist. He's super talented at sports, I'm lucky to make it across the room without tripping. But amazingly enough, we balance each other out. We are strong where the other is weak, and it's an amazing bond that I would have never expected to find! It's amazing what God does for you when you let Him be in control of your life!
